How does Vanbrugh exploit the female characters of the play? It can be said that Vanbrugh exploits the female characters in his play. This statement can be made when taking into consideration the time and historical factors. The play was written just after a time when society was being suppressed by extreme religious beliefs. The Play was written along with others, to restore theatres and women were allowed on stage for the first time. We could therefore say that women were exploited in the play, due to possible mocking of the women who were new to the stage. One of the most important aspects of the restoration comedy was wit. This was used in terms of wooing the women in the play. An example of this is when Foppington confesses his love to Amanda, "I am in love with you to desperation."
