Pride and prejudice reflects the social and historical context in which it was written in several ways, mainly through characters describing affairs of the timeframe and speaking of social nuances. Telltale occurances are the presence of militia, and the anticipation prior to their arrival.The laws on inheritance are limited, and sexual preference is another element of their social background. The priorities and importance of a "good" marriage furthur develop the stories background. Social rank is another factor, as well as good breeding, moral standards and the restricted environment it causes influences the characters and their actions. The sexual connotations of Wickham and Lydia's relationship are not spoken of in great detail but obviously cause discomfort amongst the families.
