In the Fox Lawrence's exploration of the roles men and women ought to play is obviously related to the disturbances brought about by a war during which many women including March and Banford found a new freedom and independence. Henry is presented as a traditionalist willing to take on, what he conceives as, the heavy responsibility of caring for a wife in exchange for her submission to his masculine authority. What do you think of Lawrence's presentation of these roles and issues? The onset of World War I in 1914 brought with it most of the male population leaving to fight on the front line. This meant that ammunition factories, engine factories and all jobs that would normally have been left to the men were now being given to the women.
