Explain the Functions of the Family. This essay will explain the functions of the family, in particular looking at the pre-industrial family, families during the industrialization period, the welfare state and the changing relationships within the family. The family performs many functions in society. After his analysis of 250 societies George Peter Murdock argues that the family perform four basic functions in society; sexual, reproductive, economic and educational. During the pre-industrial times the family used to survive as a unit. They would work as part of a team. They would work at home as well as living there. They would produce whatever they needed to survive, by working the land, or seeing to the cattle. They very often lived along side cousins, so anything that they could not produce; they would trade with each other. Skills and knowledge would be passed down through generations.
