Aim Society has debated the issue of religion as a positive or negative force for individuals in society. One way of defining religion is to see it in terms of the functions it performs for society or individuals. Emile Durkheim sees religion as a force of order; where he sees religion as a unified system of beliefs and practices. However, Marx sees religion as a way of controlling people by creating an illusion which eases the pain produced by exploitation and oppression. Coming from a religious background I am quite interested in assessing the way in which people relate to religion in contemporary times. Of particular interest in whether or not it is seen as a force for social harmony or social conflict!
