Explore The Play From Willie Mussop's Development In this play, written in the beginning of the twentieth century, one of the most distinct developments is the progression of Willie Mussop, from being a simple working class shoemaker's 'hand', to a businesses-class man, who actually holds his own successful business (and the swing effect this has on his previous employer who becomes a chronic alcoholic, form being a successful businessman is). I am going to show how the author uses various (dramatic) devices to effect this striking transformation, which is the central dramatic theme of the play. ************************************************************************ The context of this play is the beginning of the twentieth century, before the blossoming of the power of the trade union. English society was sharply divided: many, like Mussop of the play, belonged to the working class and were exploited by the upper middle class.
