Evaluate what is Positivism "The aim of sociology should be to study social facts." Durkheim. Positivists argue that humans are in essence subject to the laws of society. They believe that evidence can only be used if it can be measured. This "quantitative data" can be collected using graphs and tables for example. The data usually studied by positivists includes age, sex, qualifications, income etc. The dictionary definition of positivism states that it is a system of philosophy that deals only with positives. It excludes everything but the natural phenomena or properties of knowable things. One of the first sociologists was Auguste Comte. Comte, born in 1798, had a significant part in the formation of sociology. Comte's philosophy of positivism developed from historical studies of the human mind. When Auguste Comte claimed to have invented the new science of sociology, he said that it was going to be the science that held all other sciences...
