History - Roles of Women 1. Describe the employment opportunities of women in Britain in 1914 at the outbreak of war. At the outbreak of the war in 1914, there was not much involvement as people were sceptical. They did not believe the war would go on for such a long time and cause mass casualties so they went about their everyday lives with women doing the jobs they have been doing. In 1914, women were not treated very well and were known as the lower class of society. They were not treated equally to men and they were not allowed to vote and so the men became dominant. The main jobs for women at this time were the traditional jobs for women that did not require much skill, so they were underpaid. These were jobs like domestic service (e.g. maids), textiles (e.g. cotton spinners), clothing (e.g. dress-makers), food and...
