Dana Kornblum Cultural Studies October 1, 2002 Dead Poets Society Carpe Diem...Is it Possible? The film Dead Poets Society takes place at Welton Academy, an all boy's preparatory school in the North East. Majority of the boys who attend school here come from a privileged background and have parents that expect them to do well in school and develop into intelligent doctors and lawyers after having graduated from an Ivy League college. However, a replacement English teacher's passion for teaching romanticism changes the already paved future for six of the boys who are in his class. Keating teaches the boys to seize the day, Carpe Diem, in every endeavor the boys decide to pursue. This philosophy, however, is not attainable for the boys at this school or others that are not as fortunate as they are. Carpe Diem is achieved when one has freedom and opportunity.
