Kelsey Farley Mr. Holman English 1213/Character Analysis December 1, 2003 Comparison and Contrast of Grant Wiggins and Jefferson In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying Grant Wiggins and Jefferson played key roles in depicting the life of black men in the segregated South. Wiggins was an educated black man still considered to be a "nigger" even after he attended college and Jefferson was a simple-minded plantation worker who, because of the color of his skin, was falsely accused of robbery and mass murder and sentenced to death. Both men lived their lives in a segregated and racist community and were very resentful and bitter, nevertheless, each for their own reasons. Despite the differences, because of events, which occurred during their lives, both Grant and Jefferson came to realize they had many things in common. Grant Wiggins was a black man in his mid twenties raised by his aunt, when his parents moved away and left...
