To compare and contrast the terms "poverty" and "social exclusion", we shall begin by exploring their definitions. In relation to the concept of poverty we must discuss poverty in terms of "absolute" and "relative". We shall investigate the similarities and differences, and discuss them in relation to "social exclusion". To illustrate the most useful concepts in understanding the problems in contemporary society, we shall investigate briefly where the term "social exclusion" originated. We shall discuss government policies, which have tried to combat "poverty" and "social exclusion", including "The New Right" and "The Third Way".
