Commentary on Act 1 of A Doll's House Francesca BLYTHE The first act is primarily the building of the foundations, in other words the setting of the scene for the rest of the play. Characters are introduced and secrets revealed. An impression is made on each of the characters around which conclusions and assumptions can be drawn. A male dominated society is presented and the female protagonist, a lady who conforms, or appears to conform to this role extremely well is familiarized. It is her character and indeed her husbands, which bring the irony to the title of the play. On the outside the family appears to be perfect, with each person fulfilling their assigned roles and portraying their designated characters.
