Close study - Chapter 5 of 'Time Passes' Tanya Roddie At the Time Virginia Woolf was writing 'Time Passes' , the General Strike, organised by the Labour movement in May 1926, was taking place. The turbulence of national unrest and class conflict appears to be reflected in the instability and decay of this section of the novel. The figure of Mrs. McNab, the coarse caretaker, was conceived at a time when Virginia Woolf was acutely aware of the physically demanding nature of working-class life, whilst also knowing that her own privileged position in society was far from this. Virginia Woolf came from an upper-middle-class background, and her characters from other classes lack the authenticity apparent in those of her own. For example, her portrayal of Mrs. McNab in this chapter verges on caricature, especially when compared with her intricate and sensitive characterization of Mrs Ramsay in 'The Window'.
