As Marge Piercy's "The Bonsai Tree" suggests, throughout history society has shaped "living creatures," specifically women, and prevented them from growing to their full potential. The Awakening by Kate Chopin is the perfect example of where literature was used to make a statement concerning the errors of society in the treatment of women.
