As Marge Piercy's "The Bonsai Tree" suggests, throughout history society has shaped "living creatures," specifically women, and prevented them from growing to their full potential. The Awakening by Kate Chopin is the perfect example of where literature was used to make a statement concerning the errors of society in the treatment of women. The main character, Edna Pontellier, lived in a time and a society where women were expected to fulfill a very distinct role, but through this character that Chopin so carefully shapes in the mind of the reader, she leaves a lasting impression on both the mind and the...
