Jeffry Wiatt Prof: Rittenberg 4/13/04 Chinese Culture &Tradition The philosophies of Confucianism and Daoism were founded by Confucius and Lao Zi, they date back during the 6th century B.C. Confucius was a great reformer who lived from 551B.C-479B.C He was known for the Analects, in which he compiled to guide and encourage citizens to conform to his philosophy. Confucius traveled throughout China giving advice to rulers and teaching about morality and ethics. He advocated a type of ruler that could be a father to his people and look after their basic needs. It encouraged officials to be loyal to their rulers and refuse to serve the corrupt, He also advocated absolute authority of a king over his subject, a husband over his wife, and a father over his son; and stressed the five constant virtues, namely benevolence (ren), righteousness (yi), propriety (li), wisdom (zhi) and fidelity (xin) as basic ethical code.
