Assess the view that health, illness and disability are socially constructed. Something that is socially constructed could be an idea which may appear to be natural and obvious to those who accept it, but in reality is an invention or artefact of a particular culture or society. The implication is that social constructs are human choices rather than laws. Is illness socially constructed? Are disabilities a state of mind? Is health an impossible ideal constructed to make money? There is no doubt that problems that exist now were once non-existent but does that mean that we, as a society, are being manipulated? Health can simply be defined as the absence of any illness, but that would surely mean that a smoker is healthy, after all, many smokers can be free of infection but be unable to run a mile, or even run in worst cases. Just trying to define health shows...
