A lone parent is seen as a teenage single mother in today's society but only a very small and decreasing number of lone parents are. A lone parent is can be one of a group of people; the death of a parent might cause only one parent, people who are separated or people who are not co-habiting with children cause lone parents. The parent of a lone parent family has either separated or divorced from the other parent, been widowed or are just single. There are an estimated 1.7 million one-parent families in Britain today that is nearly a quarter of all families. One-parent families reflect changing family patterns throughout western society.
