A feminist is a person who holds women in high regard and believes that women are entitled to equality with men. The feminist movement has focussed the spotlight of attention on women. In recent years the feminist theory has had more influence on the study of the family that any other approach. This is because the feminist theory disagrees with the more traditional view of the functionalist theory, i.e. the roles within the family. Feminists are generally critical of the effects of family life on women. Feminist theory suggests that the modern nuclear family takes care of the needs of men and not the needs of all society.
