Rhian Morgan Sociology October 5th An overall summary of the three theories of culture The functionalist theory of culture believes that we are who we are because of the society we live in. Society shapes us, and culture plays a large part in this. However, functionalists have a tendency to exaggerate the size of the role that society plays. They disregard the fact that individuals have their own free will, ability to make decisions, and act on impulse. Functionalists believe that culture holds together, like glue, the structure of society. Regardless of this fact, they do believe that society can be improved. Having said this, functionalists base all their knowledge on the majority of society, and are often likely to downplay the smaller minority groups. By basing their beliefs on the majority of individuals, they underestimate the importance and impact of these smaller-known units. These include gay, disabled, or minority ethnic groups....
