English 4790-101: American Literature 1900-1945 Professor Bruce Dick Essay number 1. Upton Sinclair, after having this novel rejected by a number of different publishers, had "The Jungle" published at his own expense. The results of it becoming a best-seller meant that Sinclair could financially back a cooperative living venture in New Jersey. Willa Cather graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1895 making her part of a small number of women that had achieved a college education at this time. Both authors have their supporters and critics, especially for these two novels. In this essay I will attempt to compare and contrast the themes and styles of Cather and Sinclair in an effort to discover which would be of more use to an English class as a literary device; looking at the social conditions endured by the immigrants and their reactions to these conditions. Mainly this will centre on Sinclair's urban view...
