Adrienne Rich and Rita Dove. Writing about race, gender and ethnicity. Adrienne Rich and Rita Dove write about the themes of gender, race and ethnicity in their poems. In 1984 Rich stated that she wrote her poems as "a woman and not a man, a white and also a Jewish inheritor of a particular Western consciousness" In an interview with professor Thomas, Dove explained "I'm a woman, I'm an African-American. My poems often reflect those two aspects of myself" (www.english.uiuc.edu/,aps/poets/a_f/dove/mwthomas.htm). In this essay I am going to Rich's career has been described as one that 'seeks to reimagine the relationship among writing, eros, and sexual identity' (p402 Adrienne Rich's Poetry and Prose). She has developed a style that challenges the boundaries enforced on women in an attempt to change attitudes.
