... Explain the purpose and practice of ONE particular Religious Community St.Benedict is generally regarded as the father of the monastic movement. The first monastery of Benedictines was formed around 529. The 'Rule of St.Benedict' was used to organize most of the monastic communities that followed it. Each Benedictine monastery is a 'School of the Lords Service'. Ora et labora 'Pray and Work' is often put forward as the Benedictine motto. The phrase is not found in the rule of St.Benedict however it is a useful expression of the Benedictine way of life, as a balanced life that gives both an active and contemplative aspect of the religious life their proper place. It is perhaps better to say the motto may well be 'Pray, read and work' as St.Benedict stresses the importance of bible and other spiritual reading. Benedictines pursue personal holiness as members of a community. The support of a group
