... St Francis of Assisi The Life of St Francis Francis' father, Peter Bernardone, was a trader. He sold spice and was fabric, which brought form Asia and was usually out of town for business. When Francis was born, his father was in Asia. His mother, Mona Pico, named him John, but Peter Bernardone renamed him Francis immediately after he returned home. Francis spent his happy childhood in a wealthy family. Since Francis was in a rich family, he studied Latin, the vernacular and provincial. In addition, he studied music, songs, and poetry, too. He seems like a good student, but from other aspect, he was also the leader in the escapades of the town's youth. One day, while he was working in his father's cloth shop, came a beggar. Francis rudely kicked the beggar our, but after a while, he regretted. He chased after the beggar, gave him money and apologised for that.
