Explain the reasons why Muhammed left Mecca for Medina While Muhammed hadn't spent all of his life in Mecca, he had been born there, and as such regarded it as his home. However, there were notable differences between the commonly held beliefs of Meccans, and of Muhammed himself, which were ultimately to force Muhammed into exile to Medina. Mecca, centre of the Arabian paganism of the time, was an extremely corrupt place. Religious belief in one, all-powerful god had warped into polytheism, supporting belief in around 300 gods, which was taught by Mecca's religious leaders. Greed motivated violence, which often resulted in wars. Drinking, gambling and rape were all everyday features of life in the city. Survival in the elitist society was based solely on strength (physical or financial), and as such was very unfair.
