2) a) "Indulgences" in the context of the practices of the Catholic Church in the early 16th century meant a piece of paper sold to you by the Pope entitling you to less time in purgatory. Indulgences were first used by the Church when they were given to soldiers in the Crusade as they were fighting for a good cause.
