2) a) "Indulgences" in the context of the practices of the Catholic Church in the early 16th century meant a piece of paper sold to you by the Pope entitling you to less time in purgatory. Indulgences were first used by the Church when they were given to soldiers in the Crusade as they were fighting for a good cause. In the early 16th century however, indulgences were seen as a corrupt item that had barely any meaning anymore and were used by the Church as a way of making more money to fund their own activities. b) In this essay I seek to explain why the printing press was the key factor in spreading criticism about the Catholic Church that led to the reformation in Germany.
