Pilgrimage has always been an important part of the Christian Churches. Some places became places of pilgrimage because supernatural manifestations may have taken place there. Other places of pilgrimage developed as a result of the growing sense of community within its people. Those who go on a pilgrimage are called pilgrims. The seven churches in Rome are St. Peter's, S. Paolo Fuori le Mura (St. Paul's Outside the Walls), S. Giovanni in Laterano, S. Lorenzo Fuori le Mura (St. Lawrence Outside the Walls), Sta Groce in Gerusalemme (Holy Cross in Jerusalem), S. Pietro in Vincoli (St. Peter in Chains), and Sta. Maria Maggiore. These churches have origins in the fourth century CE. The purpose was to build churches to the glory of God.
