Behind Closed Doors "In 1999, 37% of women homicide victims were killed by their present or former partners compared to 6% of men. This totals 92 women- 1 every 3 days or 2 every week." Criminal Statistics England and Wales 1999. There is not a 'typical woman who will be battered', women of all religious, ethnic and economical back rounds can be affected by physical violence. It is estimated that 1 in 4 women will experience some form of physical violence in an intimate relationship, every 15 seconds the crime of battering occurs. Battering is a pattern of behaviour used to establish control over another person through fear and intimidation, usually including the threat or use of violence. The abuse escalates, often beginning with small acts of violence in her presence, such as punching walls, breaking ornaments or harming pets. The behaviour becomes gradually worse with physical assaults, sexual abuse or name-calling....
