The novel is based on the controversial premise that there is a conspiracy within the Catholic Church to cover up the true story of Jesus. The story explores the issues of the power to believe and the need to believe. The text is constructed to position readers through characterization, narration and language. Our response to characters will implicitly involve liking or disliking them and approving or disapproving of what they do. When we were first introduced to Sir Leigh Teabing, a British Royal Historian, he appears to be innocent, helping Langdon and Neveu to escape from the French Judiciaries and in the grail quest.
