Search for martyrdom St Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195. He was baptised in the Cathedral Church of Old Lisbon. "Fernando" was a revenue officer and knight at the court of Alfonso II, who was the King of Portugal. St Anthony joined the community of Canons Regular of St Augustine in Lisbon when he was 15. At such a young age when he was 17 her was transferred more than175km away to the Augustine Monastery of Santa Cruz, Coimbra. This was renowned for its biblical scholarship. St Anthony spent nine years here and there is every indication that he learned the sacred scriptures off by heart as he spent his whole time there in intense study.
