Laine Majeske Pop Culture/ Final 3/19/2002 Tying the knot in the U.S. As Americans we often fail to notice the oddity behind many of our modern customs. We endure a plethora of holidays and ceremonies involving an entire system of procedure which is generally a mystery even to the participants. The basis of many holidays is rooted in religion: Christmas, Easter, and Hanukah are all popular Judeo-Christian events; however, in this new age where people are free of ethnic and racial tensions, where the flow of information turns the world, it is important that we do not lose sight of heritage. In that spirit, curiosity dictates an examination of one custom which Americans used to hold in the highest regard: the bond of holy matrimony. Marriage is perhaps one of the most awkward ceremonies we observe in this country. The joining of two people is seen as a joyous event for all...
