Christianity teaches that marriage is monogamous (one partner only) and that it should be regarded as a serious lifelong commitment. Many Anglicans, Orthodox and especially Roman Catholics view marriage as a sacrament as it is a sign of God's love or grace. Therefore, Christian groups hold firmly to the Biblical teaching that sexual intercourse outside marriage is wrong. Sex outside of or before marriage, known as pre-marital sex, is considered immoral as there is no promise of faithfulness between the two people, compared to the declaration of promise which can be seen in the wedding vows; 'I give thee my troth'.
