Christians believe that it is a gift from God and his intentions were for men and women to live together, support each other and to be faithful to each other and to help in partnership of the upbringing of children. We can support this with this extract from Mark 10:6-9. "But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
