In the synagogue, the Jewish place of worship, woman could only listen from behind a curtain or a screen. Often there was a separate gallery above the area in which men worshipped. All of these areas has restricted and basically no view of the proceedings and also a poor ability to hear the readings. Women were forbidden to read from the torah and also from preaching.
