... Christians response to marriage and divorce. Christians regard marriage as an extremely important stage in life. The wedding service itself has a great message to say about the meaning of marriage. Jesus himself accompanied a wedding in Cana of Galilee. This shows he approves of marriage. According to Christianity, marriage is when 'man and woman become one flesh'; it is a very close commitment. The reasons for marriage are: companionship, sex, and then children. This order of reasons is fairly new and the old order was: children, sex then companionship. The order changed because people no longer have to rely on children to look after them or to work for money to support the family. Also contraception has been introduced to prevent pregnancy altogether. In the priest's introduction at a church wedding service, the line "they shall be united in that love as Christ is united with his church" shows
