WHY DO MANY CHRISTIANS OPPOSE ABORTION? Liz Wollen Abortion is described as the termination of pregnancy any time after conception and before birth. In some countries it is illegal, mainly because it goes against the country's religious beliefs. In the UK abortion is legal up until the 24th week. After this abortion is only allowed if the life or health of the mother is at risk, if two doctors agree that it is needed, if it is carried out on registered premises or if the baby is not yet able to survive on its own. The issue of abortion has raised a lot of religious, ethical and moral issues. Many Christians believe that life begins when the sperm first meets egg, therefore any form of abortion is seen as murder. The egg and sperm first meet in week two of pregnancy.
