Needs of babies and children The care and needs of children and babies is very important in all aspects of early years work. Another important factor is safety and these two considerations will run through all the descriptions I am going to outline. It is essential to have routines so that all the needs of the child are met. 0-1, 1-2, 3-5, 5-8 Routines Care of skin and teeth and hair A baby's skin is extremely sensitive and vulnerable; it hasn't yet built up a defence system against things in the world meaning it is more prone to infection as it is less able to fight off bacteria and toxins. Only a small amount of soap should be used on the baby, but it should always be a mild soap containing ingredients such as olive, coconut, or even palm oil.
