In "Désirée's Baby" by Kate Chopin, are the bonds of racial slavery stronger Than the bonds of love? The story "Désirée's Baby" by Kate Chopin is about a baby, which is found by a rich family. The story was written during the last decade of the nineteenth century and is set on a cotton plantation. The story starts with a baby, Désirée, being found. Monsieur and Madame Valmondé bring her up as their own. The family don't know of Désirée's origin or her past, but after awhile it does not matter to them, "In time Madame Valmondé abandoned every speculation". When the girl is grown up, a rich neighbour called Armand sees her while riding past and falls in love with her, "as if struck by a pistol". He does not know her past or origin as well, but he is still determined to marry her; all Armand knows about...
