AO1 Explain what teaching Catholics might use in a discussion about abortion. Catholics today agree that to directly end the life of a foetus in the womb is a serious moral sin. Genesis tells us "Life begins at conception". This would suggest that from the moment of conception, the foetus is a human and has rights to life. "You shall not murder" Exodus 20:13 informs us that even if the child is in the womb it still has a life and having an abortion is seen as killing someone. "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you." Jeremiah 1:5, suggests that God knows the soul of every foetus, and therefore proves that the fertilised egg is a human life.
