Explain how Christian belief, including the Bible, affects the Christian attitude to abortion. Abortion is an operation to cause the premature expulsion of the foetus from the womb. Although abortion is not mentioned in the Bible, from its earliest history the Church opposed it. From early writings from the 4th century CE the following was written: "Thou shalt not slay thy child by causing abortion...for everything that has been shaped by and received a soul from God, if it is slain, shall be avenged." Roman Catholics are totally against abortion, and various dictates have been written to state that point. They say that to kill an unborn child is wrong, even if it is a few cells because they believe that life begins from the moment of conception. A document from the 2nd century called the 'Didache' quotes "you shall not kill by abortion the fruit of the womb". However, Catholics do agree...
