Decisions on Life and Living AO1 - Beliefs Christians believe al life is sacred, because of this belief they are generally against abortion and euthanasia. Euthanasia is the act of killing a person as painlessly as possible (drugs are normally used), usually someone who is terminally ill or in great pain. For this reason it is often called mercy killing. Euthanasia is illegal in the United Kingdom. However, if large doses of painkillers are used to help ease a person's suffering, and a person dies as a result of this it understood as double effect and is permitted. The Roman Catholic Church does not believe doctors should use extraordinary treatment to keep patients alive.
