An abortion is described as the intentional destruction of a foetus or the inducing of a premature expulsion from the womb to cause its death. Abortion is permitted under certain conditions in Scotland, England and Wales. The Abortion Act 1967 and Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 is the legalisation which governs abortion in these regions. According to this, abortion is permitted under the following conditions: if the is a risk to the life of the mother, if there is a risk that the mother may suffer injury to her mental or physical health, if there is a risk to her existing children or if there is a strong chance that the children may suffer from serious mental or physical abnormalities.
