Catholic Christians would agree because they believe that it is wrong to kill an unborn child at any stage of development, because it is a sacred human life from the moment of conception. They believe that even if the child is a result of rape, it should not be aborted because the child cannot pay for another person's crime. They encourage women not to abort the child, but to have it adopted, because it would then have some quality of life, rather than none at all. The declaration on procured abortion in 1974 stated that abortion was 'a serious sin and that everyone, whether Catholic or not, should have proper respect for human life.
