Describe some of the different the ways that the Sabbath is observed in Jewish homes and in the synagogue. The Sabbath or Shabbat is originally from the Hebrew word 'to rest'. G-d gave this name to the day when Jews must not do any work. In the bible it is stated, "Six days you shall do your work but on the seventh day you shall rest" (Ex.22.12) This day begins 18 minutes before sunset on Friday (as this is when Jews feel that the day begins) and ends 42 minutes after sunset on Saturday. The lighting of the candles is very significant and has to be balanced correctly because it cannot be done on the Sabbath itself as it is classed as work.
