History Essay - Who contributed more towards Mormon life, Brigham Young or Joseph Smith? Personally, I believe that Brigham Young contributed more towards Mormon life because of the following reasons; Firstly, he took over the whole Mormon society once Joseph Smith was assassinated by vigilantes on 27th June 1844. Brigham Young was ready to take on all responsibilities that had been left to him by Joseph Smith's death. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, Brigham Young moved the Mormons westward, from Illinois to Salt Lake City after the repeated conflict as well as the fact that Governor Boggs had set an extermination order against all Mormons in Illinois. Joseph Smith had endured such conflict throughout his entire Mormon career.
