I agree with this statement to certain extent. Western economies do indeed place emphasis upon material possessions. The Buddhist religion teachers its followers to try their hardest to decrease their worldly attachment. Living in societies, which are extremely consumer driven, could pose a problem for Buddhists trying to live out their faith. In western economies jobs and status are considered terribly important. The better and more well paid your job the more material possessions. Your status will then improve and the community will have a higher opinion of you. Therefore in turn, everybody works hard to acquire themselves an enhanced quality and status so the society itself is often incredibly hectic. This immediately causes conflict, as the religion of Buddhism requires its followers to adopt a calm and relaxed manner. To carry out this conflicting attitude could prove to difficult.
