Utilitarianism Essay o What are the advantages of utilitarianism: (28 marks) o Identify the main problems of utilitarianism. To what extent do these make utilitarianism unacceptable? (12 marks) Utilitarianism (U) is a theory which can be summarised as "that which is good is that which equals the greatest sum of pleasure and the least sum of pain." This theory was first fully articulated by Jeremy Bentham who wanted to solve the blatant social inequalities in his time and later developed by John Stuart Mill. The theory can be described as teleological as the theory is dependant on the results of the actions carried out rather than the actions themselves. To determine whether an action is right or wrong Bentham introduced the utility principle, this refers to the amount of pleasure or happiness caused by the action, "an action is right if it produces the greatest good for the greatest...
