Robin McCarty Development and Teaching in Tae Kwon Do Patterns form the basis of all teaching in Tae Kwon Do. They provide one of the few opportunities to perform a wide selection of moves together in a quasi-realistic situation. While patterns lack the vigour of sparring, they do provide an excellent way of practicing swift focused movements which are so vital to other areas of the art. The ability to improvise movement is also brought to the fore by the creation of a free-form. In the process of creating the form, the student must think very carefully about each and every movement to make the form applicable and realistic. Also, thought can be given to such diverse components of forms as multiple combinations, multiple opponents and flamboyant moves.
