Why was The Popular Front formed? The Popular Front of 1936 was a groundbreaking event in France's political history, whereby the parties of the left, united in order to create a strong left wing party, to act as a barrier against the extreme right. The main reasons that led to the creation of this political alliance was without doubt the threat of the extreme right which was benefiting from the economic crisis France was in, the international threat of France's fascist neighbours and the menace of war. The root of the formation of the Popular Front of 1936 is in the economic crisis France endured during the 1930's. The Wall Street Crash of 1929, as McMillan states 'unleashed the greatest economic crisis that the world had yet witnessed, but at first its impact on France was minimal'1.
