Why did President Nixon resign in 1974? President Nixon's turn of office: 1972 - 74. Watergate, the political scandal that ensured President Nixon's resignation. What began as a burglary into the Watergate building on June 17th 1972, escalated into a major scandal that had an unsettling affect on how Americans views the Republican government of the USA. Richard Nixon's Presidency and Watergate triggered a first rate national and political scandal that still stains America's politics today. It ruined many Americans views on their "perfect" and mighty government, and alerted them to the shear corruption behind it. On June 17th 1972 a local policeman discovered five burglars, in the Watergate building, Washington D.C.
