Deriving from the Latin opponere, meaning to place against, the opposition has become a fundamental part of the modern Australian polity. "The role of opposition in the sense of the term is so imprecise a word to study alone, as it relates to an institution spread so wide as to cover all forms of conflict in a society".1 There are however, elementary themes an opposition to government must perform to efficiently perform their role in the governmental arena. These themes incorporate the "Taken for granted" aspect of the opposition.
